Bash Profile For Mac

A typical install of OS X won't create a .bash_profile for you. When you want to run functions from your command line, this is a must-have.

  2. Type 'cd ~/' to go to your home folder
  3. Type 'touch .bash_profile' to create your new file.
  4. Edit .bash_profile with your favorite editor (or you can just type 'open -e .bash_profile' to open it in TextEdit).

Open your “.bashprofile” in nano with the command below: nano /.bashprofile With “.bashprofile” open, we will want to add a new line that starts with. Executing.bashprofile (or source /.bashprofile) doesn't seem to do anything. (.bashprofile below; I don't see the echo 'bash profile end' in the terminal). However, if I copy-paste lines from.bashprofile, they work. I'm running an interactive login shell, have tried restarting but now am at a loss to understand.bashprofile doesn't. There is a hidden file in your Mac’s user directory named.bashprofile. Bash Profile Macos

I am new to Mac and trying to figure out why my .bash_profile is not working. As I read suggestions, I try them. Here is my latest issue:
E325: ATTENTION
Found a swap file by the name '.bash_profile.swp'
owned by: Brian dated: Fri Apr 10 22:09:01 2009
file name: ~Brian/.bash_profile
modified: YES
user name: Brian host name: brian-principes-macbook.local
process ID: 655
While opening file '.bash_profile'
(1) Another program may be editing the same file.
If this is the case, be careful not to end up with two
different instances of the same file when making changes.
Quit, or continue with caution.
(2) An edit session for this file crashed.
If this is the case, use ':recover' or 'vim -r .bash_profile'
to recover the changes (see ':help recovery').
If you did this already, delete the swap file '.bash_profile.swp'
to avoid this message.
Swap file '.bash_profile.swp' already exists!

Any suggestions?
